George Walker IV, on his first day as a staff photographer, joined reporters Kimberlee Kruesi, Travis Loller and video journalist Kristin Hall in chronicling gun protests that led to two Black state lawmakers being expelled from the Tennessee state legislature. Walker’s photos, along with strong work from multiformat colleagues, told the story of a momentous week in Nashville. Kruesi caught wind of something big brewing: The GOP-led House was preparing to file a resolution to kick out three Democratic lawmakers who took to the floor of the chamber the previous week to push for stricter gun laws. She quickly filed a story that would kick off a week of stellar coverage of one of the biggest storylines in the country. The mainbar on the expulsion of the two Black lawmakers — a third, who was white, narrowly escaped being expelled — earned 400,000 page views and notched an engagement score of 87. Stories, photos or both earned front pages including The Anchorage Daily News, The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, The Las Vegas Review-Journal, The Seattle Times, The Lexington Herald-Leader, The Chattanooga Times Free Press, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. and The Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Photos of the protest and expulsion by Walker were featured on NBC’s Today.
