After doing an analysis that was one of the first to examine racial disparities of COVID-19 cases and deaths nationwide, AP's Race and Ethnicity and data teams continued gathering and analyzing data. Using the state and local data available to them, they found nearly one-third of those who have died are African American, with black people representing about 14% of the population in the areas covered in the analysis. And beyond the data the teams’ latest all-formats story looked into the lives of people personally affected.
