Reporter Don Thompson revealed historic milestones for LGBTQ political representation in California and beyond. Well before Election Day, Thompson learned from LGBTQ groups that California lawmakers could hit a historic milestone this year: 10% representation in the state Legislature.
Thompson immediately saw the significance of such a story, particularly in light of the attacks on LGBTQ rights from some lawmakers in other parts of the country. With contributions from colleagues across the country, including Kathy McCormack, Amy Forliti, Claire Rush and Kimberlee Kruesi, as well as editor Jeff McMillan, AP was able to offer a comprehensive national look at LGBTQ victories in the midterm elections.
