Florida reporter Terry Spencer had just signed off his Saturday shift when reports emerged of a shooting in Jacksonville. He and Deep South Assistant News Director Jim Van Anglen quickly assessed that it was more than an ordinary shooting, and Spencer got back to work producing an alert series on the shootings with authorities saying there were multiple fatalities. Photographer John Raoux pivoted from a sports event to cover the killings, filing valuable early photos and then moving images of the community response Saturday and Sunday. His photos were widely used by publications including the New York Times. Reporter Russ Bynum drove from Tampa to report on the ground. Within a few hours, Jacksonville authorities confirmed three deaths and that the shooter had killed himself. In Washington, Race and Ethnicity Editor Aaron Morrison was winding up his coverage of the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s March on Washington and interviewed people from Jacksonville who described how these killings echoed with history of racist attacks in the city.
